Wanted to pass along 11 fantastic minutes of “new Drobo” discussion from two customers – who turn out to be among the leading visionaries, educators, and thought leaders in the photography and video production fields.

Scott Bourne is s a digital media pioneer whose internationally recognized photography has appeared in more than 200 books, magazines, newspapers, television shows, fine art galleries, and websites. He’s also the author of 5 photography books and he runs the #1 photography podcast in the world, PhotoFocus.

Rich Harrington is on the forefront of the merger of photography and video and combines his love of both into his professional career with his company RHED Pixel. Rich is a certified instructor for Adobe, Apple, and Avid.

Scott and Rich spent a little time bantering about the new Drobos on their January 15, 2013 PhotoFocus podcast. If you have 11 minutes, check out the podcast below. Here are some terrific sound bites:

Performance in 2013 is about juggling more than one ball at a time

Hi there again. I’m guessing that if you are interested in high-performance storage, you may be looking at Thunderbolt-based solutions. Good idea. You’re probably the kind of person who likes to get things done fast and who likes to do more than one thing at a time. I confess, I’m in that club too.

Ladies and gentlemen, big drum roll for the first winner in the Big, Big Drobo Giveaway is Brad Johnson of Brad J Photography in Naperville, IL. We want to know more about Brad and what he has in store for his new Drobo and as soon as we find out we’ll let you know.

Thanks again everyone, for your patience, ongoing interest, and support. The Drobo 5D is here and ready to begin shipping – and I think you’re going to love it. First of all, it’s a Drobo – with the same ease-of-use, flexibility, and expandability that are synonymous with what we do.

Secondly, it’s fast. Really fast. Between 4x – 12x faster than previous Drobo generations. And it’s not just Thunderbolt and USB 3.0. Hi there – I just wanted to give you a quick update on the status of the new Drobo 5D and Mini products – everyone has been waiting anxiously, and very patiently, thank you!

First, the good news. The products are looking great! I’ve been using them and watching them in action here in the office – and they are clearly the best Drobos ever – faster, quieter, more robust, and much smaller (in the case of the Mini). Thanks again everyone for the incredible interest in our new Drobo 5D and Drobo Mini. The pre-orders keep flowing in, and we’re working to make as many as we need to fill the initial demand. We’ve received quite a few questions from you so let me get to the most frequently asked so far.

1. What is the performance going to be?
First things first – they’re going to be fast – we’ve done a lot in the design (see below) to make sure of that. And although the hardware is final, we’re still getting more out of our software every day, which is critical to optimizing performance. Is the tiering technology in the Drobo 5D and Drobo Mini the same as the B1200i?

This question came in from a blogger and we thought it was a pretty good question. There is a difference and it’s a long answer, but I’ll try and summarize.

We ship the B1200i with 3 SSDs, leaving the remainder of the drive bays available for HDDs. Because the B1200i is in “dual disk redundancy” mode by default, those SSDs are in a triple mirror, allowing you to lose two of them and still have access to your data. … Continue Reading

Wow. Six years ago, I was working for a muti billion-dollar storage company and I saw my first demo of BeyondRAID (before a Drobo existed). I was blown away by the simplicity and flexibility of the storage stack. I had to have it and I quickly became an early Drobo adopter in my own home. Now, I manage the Drobo product family and we are releasing new Drobos based on a platform that has a ground-up design. I am very excited!
