Validation for Drobo B1200i in real-world testing

blog mblandini logo Validation for Drobo B1200i in real world testingDrobo is known as a cool company with cool storage. At events, countless folks stop by telling us they would love one for their house. And if they’re in IT, they soon realize that they also want it for work. For IT applications though, technology has to be more than cool. It has to work; and especially in SMB shops, they want to know it has been tested by a reliable third party. Working with ESG, we have a report with that validation. So, you can skip this blog and go straight to reading the report.Continue Reading

Interop 2012 Las Vegas – a reunion in many ways

blog mblandini logo Interop 2012 Las Vegas – a reunion in many waysThis was Drobo’s first time participating in Interop. Having spent almost a decade in big networking prior to Drobo, I caught up with hundreds of friends and customers that I’d worked with in the past – not unlike a high-school reunion. The word “reunion” is the noun form of the verb “reunite,” a Middle English term from the Medieval Latin root “reunitus“: to bring together again. Just like a high school reunion, everyone commented on how I have a lot less hair than they remember (aren’t reunions great icon wink Interop 2012 Las Vegas – a reunion in many ways ).

We had a great time introducing some folks to Drobo. But believe it or not, most people who stopped by our stand did not need the introduction.Continue Reading

Hyper-V is like Prego, it’s in there

blog mblandini logo Hyper V is like Prego, it’s in thereWith a very Italian name, you might wonder why I’m making reference to a bottled spaghetti sauce. I use it when it goes on sale, though I dramatically enhance it with two different meats, crimini mushrooms, and sweet onions, bolstered with stewed tomatoes and a can of paste, simmered with chili flakes and a kicker of sriracha sauce. Maybe if I used Prego it would already be “in there”, but the prep is still pretty easy,

The word “prego” is an Italian word that means “you are welcome.”Continue Reading

Both. Isn’t it what everyone wants?

blog mblandini logo Both. Isn’t it what everyone wants?Tell me if this analogy works for you. Drobo just launched support for SSDs and our solution for Automated Data-Aware Tiering . Neither SSDs nor tiering are new to the industry, but the way Drobo provides them is very unique. And for SMB customers there is nothing like it, because the solution provides BOTH high capacity AND great performance you’d otherwise get only by sacrificing capacity with many 15K SAS drives. What has been stuck in my head for months now is an old pizza commercial about choices. Both – it’s what everyone wants.Continue Reading

Reality is in the eye of the beholder

blog mblandini e1332538823856 Reality is in the eye of the beholderTechnology has altered reality.  Sporting events can be more vivid and higher impact on a 60+in HD flat panel compared to seeing the event live. Technology discussions can be faster and more interactive over the web using a live demo with displays and webcams compared to sitting in a room with a whiteboard. Technology enables new ways of doing things that really are better – not necessarily avatars and CGI – but a more efficient version of what is real.

Some real and really good analysis was posted today from someone with a very keen eye on reality for storage customers. Matt Prigge posted to his Information Overload column @ InfoWorld.com on “How to avoid a forklift storage upgrade.”  Continue Reading

Drobo-Veeam promos extended to Q2 by popular demand

blog jsherhart Drobo Veeam promos extended to Q2 by popular demandWell, the people spoke and we gave away a lot of Veeam software in Q1. Because we want you to have the most affordable VM backup solution on the market, we’ve decided to extend the offer to Q2. Actually there are two Q2 offers in effect until June 30:

Today a customer bought 1 petabyte of Drobo storage for their business!

blog tbuiocchi e1332538899728 Today a customer bought 1 petabyte of Drobo storage for their business!Hold onto your hats – one Petabyte, one end user, one deal! That’s a long way from where we started and quite a testament to the value that businesses are seeing from Drobo.

We don’t as yet have the approval to give you all the details about the customer and their use case, but this is just a natural (albeit unexpectedly large) step in our growth into the business segment. Continue Reading

Harmonious overtones from a great ensemble

blog mblandini e1332538823856 Harmonious overtones from a great ensembleDefined as “a group producing a single effect,” an ensemble combines several parts generating a powerful result. Every technology solution is a group of harmonious elements, whereas the solution is the single effect. The power of an ensemble is much greater than the sum of its parts. I’m sure you’ve experienced for yourself how parts in harmony deliver overtones for a combined sound that is perceived to be greater.

This has been a fun week @ Drobo, as we announced several partnerships, including a solution with Amazon Web Services.  Continue Reading

Small is the new huge

blog mblandini e1332538823856 Small is the new hugeI was not trying to be overly personal in the last post, but it was relevant to the discussion … personality can be relevant, well sort of. In addition to being heterogeneous, I’ve never been physically taller than 5’6” and thus shorter than average most everywhere, and these days I have a smaller number of fully operational hair follicles. I am thus predisposed to believing that small is the new huge. I’m also a fitting spokesperson for the small box, big storage company. I am not just a Drobo VP …  you know how the rest goes … I’m a home Drobo user as well.Continue Reading

Using Drobo with Veeam just got a bit (maybe a lot) sweeter

Hello from Jim Sherhart, Marketing and Business Development @ Drobo

blog jsherhart Using Drobo with Veeam just got a bit (maybe a lot) sweeterWe have long been advocates of using our award-winning Drobo iSCSI SAN arrays with Veeam’s #1 rated solution for VM backup and replication. Veeam was designed from the ground up for virtualized environments and our iSCSI SANs are so simple to set up that you can literally have them deployed and storing data in less than 34 minutes, not to mention the fact that you can instantly expand your backup environment thanks to our patented BeyondRAID technology. Combining two great products to deliver an even better solution just makes a ton of sense.Continue Reading
