Drobo talk

blog tbuiocchi e1332538899728 Drobo talkWanted to pass along 11 fantastic minutes of “new Drobo” discussion from two customers – who turn out to be among the leading visionaries, educators, and thought leaders in the photography and video production fields.

Scott Bourne is s a digital media pioneer whose internationally recognized photography has appeared in more than 200 books, magazines, newspapers, television shows, fine art galleries, and websites. He’s also the author of 5 photography books and he runs the #1 photography podcast in the world, PhotoFocus.

Rich Harrington is on the forefront of the merger of photography and video and combines his love of both into his professional career with his company RHED Pixel. Rich is a certified instructor for Adobe, Apple, and Avid.

Scott and Rich spent a little time bantering about the new Drobos on their January 15, 2013 PhotoFocus podcast. If you have 11 minutes, check out the podcast below. Here are some terrific sound bites:

“We did everything but put a flamethrower to it”
“Fast enough for video editing … we were impressed”
“Fast enough to run an Aperture library, without any problems”

Funny. It’s just two guys talking to each other, but to my ears … it sounded like music icon wink Drobo talk .  Thanks for checking it out.

The first Drobo Users Meetup starting in Silicon Valley

blog mblandini logo The first Drobo Users Meetup starting in Silicon ValleyI’ve always loved users groups focused on a particular technology.Considered the original user group, I used to attend SHARE* conferences before coming to Drobo. These days, my wife, daughter, and I belong to a local east bay meetup group not for computer technology but for dachshunds (our two mini’s participate too). Based on my experience, I believe that users groups only work if they are lead by real users with an agenda built around the experiences of group members.

The great news is that a real user has volunteered to kick off the first Drobo Users Group here in Silicon Valley. John Reinert of ReelGood Pictures and his colleague Brook Dain of the San Jose Police Department will be leading and presenting at the inaugural Drobo Users Meetup on Wednesday December 12.  The fun and informative agenda includes:

  • 11-11:30 – John and Brook sharing their experiences test driving the new Drobo 5D and Mini Thunderbolt products in their workflow, plus other findings from John’s REDucation class that will take place12/3 to 12/7
  • 11:30-11:45 – The new Drobo 5N will be on display; volunteers will race to see who can set it up their NAS device first and win a Drobo polo shirt prize in the “NAS Challenge.”
  • 11:45-1PM – Lunch and socializing; as the event is being held @ Drobo HQ, there will also be an “expert bar” so that you can ask questions and get more demos of the latest Drobo products.

Come hang out with other users who have Drobo as part of their creative workflow and enjoy the HoneyBaked Ham holiday lunch as part of the festivities. Full information and registration for the meetup is available @ http://drobouserssv.eventbrite.com.

Net = It’s a pleasure for Drobo to support user groups. If you don’t live near Silicon Valley, but want to lead a Drobo users group of your own in your area, just let me know and we can discuss providing a kit to support your meetup event. It could be a great way for you to get a Thunderbolt Drobo to test and share your experiences with your group.

* SHARE Inc. is an independent, volunteer run association providing enterprise technology professionals with continuous education and training, valuable professional networking and effective industry influence.

Help us test drive & document Drobo in media workflows

blog mblandini logo Help us test drive & document Drobo in media workflowsI usually start every blog post with a reference or observation, but will keep this one short. Folks who buy technology or anything of high value love reading reviews from real users. I was chatting with Ewdison Then of Slashgear, who has recently test driven a new BMW X1 Crossover in Japan. I was thinking that it would have been cool to see some Tokyo drift racing in the review …

A new generation of Drobo technology

blog epounds A new generation of Drobo technologyWow. Six years ago, I was working for a muti billion-dollar storage company and I saw my first demo of BeyondRAID (before a Drobo existed). I was blown away by the simplicity and flexibility of the storage stack. I had to have it and I quickly became an early Drobo adopter in my own home. Now, I manage the Drobo product family and we are releasing new Drobos based on a platform that has a ground-up design. I am very excited!

The new Drobo 5D and Drobo Mini have everything that we (and I) have always loved from Drobo, with the addition of blazing fast performance, more robust data protection, and an innovative use of solid state drives (SSDs).Continue Reading

Thunderbolt … it may be closer than you think …

blog tbuiocchi e1332538899728 Thunderbolt ... it may be closer than you think ...I was brought up on the east coast, where we enjoyed the monster summertime thunderstorms every year. One of the coolest things about thunder is that you see it first and then you hear the “kaboom” impact – the delay sends anxious anticipation through everyone, and if you’re into science, you can estimate how far away the bolt is based on the length of the delay.  Let’s face it, thunderbolts are cool.

Today, Drobo is previewing our new Thunderbolt technology much like the real thing – you’ll see it now (check out our home page for the quick glimpse) and you’ll soon hear the kaboom. Yes, there are some other Thunderbolt products out there now, but I guarantee you that you haven’t seen anything like what we’re building.  Nothing even close.

Stay tuned, and start counting – it may be closer than you think!

Thanks – and thanks specifically to the 234,867 emails and tweets we got over the past year asking for some Drobo Thunder – your anticipation will soon be over.
